It wasn’t a perfect game but it told a politically driven story of friendships, betrayal, and loyalty. Suikoden II took what was good about the first game and made it great. Additionally, it features one of the greatest villains in video game history with Luca Blight. The game still sells for a small fortune on eBay but you can purchase it for $9.99 if you’re prepared to dust off your PSP, PS Vita or PS3. Sadly, Dungeon Siege 3 would be another sequel that would suffer the same fate as some other rushed games by the studio. While the game was a solid dungeon crawler it never quite excelled beyond being just a good but not great action RPG that doesn’t live up to its lineage. When it comes to the Shin Megami Tensei spin-off series,Persona,the best in the series comes down to three quality games that have followed each other in succession Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5.

It wasn’t BoF2, but it was still a load of fun with really nice art, fun gameplay, and interesting story. Maybe more of an action game than an RPG, it was and still is one of the most unique titles I’ve played. Also Eternal Punishment, probably the played of Persona games, but still a lot of fun as most SMT games are.
The the first three games in the Gothic series were developed by Piranha Bytes and have a rather dedicated fan following. The series is quite divisive largely because of their difficulty and quirky and even clunky controls. However, for fans of the series they provided a true hardcore RPG experience not often seen in AAA titles. The first Suikoden was released in 1995 and was considered the RPG on the PlayStation until Final Fantasy VII arrived.
In addition, the character interactions and random party conversations never fail to entertain and the story is good from start to finish. The game’s world is full of things to do, people to Shooting Games converse with, and sights to see. Recently, we’ve seen a re-emergence of the old school isometric RPG, with the likes of Divinity and thePillars of Eternityseries. There are many games that fans claim to stand the test of time and still feel as fresh and as great as it did when it was first released. Baldur’s Gate II more than lives up to its reputation as one of the greatest games ever made. Developed by the Square-Enix dream Team of Akira Toriyama, Nobuo Uematsu, Yuji Horii, Kazuhiko, and Hironobu Sakaguchi it’s a game that should be played by every RPG fan. With its non-existent load times, the Nintendo DS version is regarded as the best version and is backward compatible with the 3DS.

In video RPGs many of the functions of a GM are fulfilled by the game engine. However some multi-player video RPGs also allow for a participant to take on a GM role through a visual interface called a GM toolkit, albeit with abilities limited by the available technology. I hate Eve Online, I think the people that play it comprise some of the most vile video game community out there. But as a game it accomplishes a lot of very very interesting mechanics and is worth mention. Though I’m not sure if Spreadsheets in Space is really an RPG.
As dark as any of the other games, if not darker and more mature. It got some flak, but I think it’s a very very fun game, me and my friend played it at the same time and each took a different path.
Final Fantasy Vii (
The refinement of the Job system that everyone loves, the story was lacking but the gameplay was fantastic. A solid remake of a game that started one of the best RPG series of all time, FF could learn how to do remakes from this one I feel. Feel free to comment on absent games, but if something seems like a glaring omission it’s because I didn’t consider it an RPG.
